About the event

In this workshop, participants will learn about the history of the pantoum, a poetic form that originated in Malaysia and Indonesia. They will also learn about the work of three Black poets who have used the pantoum form: Taylor Byas, Aurielle Marie, and Patricia Smith. Participants will then have the opportunity to write their own pantoums using unconventional methods.

Objectives:

  • Learn about the history of the pantoum form
  • Learn about the work of three Black poets who have used the pantoum form
  • Write their own pantoums using unconventional methods

Materials:

  • Paper, pencils, computers
  • Copies of poems by Taylor Byas, Aurielle Marie, and Patricia Smith
  • A variety of objects, such as leaves, flowers, and feathers

Procedure:

  1. Introduction: The instructor will introduce the pantoum form and discuss its history.
  2. Readings: The instructor will read poems by Taylor Byas, Aurielle Marie, and Patricia Smith.
  3. Discussion: The instructor will lead a discussion about the poems.
  4. Writing: Participants will write their own pantoums using unconventional methods.
  5. Sharing: Participants will share their pantoums with the group.

We are offering a "Pay What You Want" structure with the minimum set to $10. All proceeds will go towards paying our presenters and helping Abode get to AWP in 2024!
